BLM seeks input for proposed Lamoille Summit trail system project
ELKO, Nev. – The Bureau of Land Management is seeking public comments on the proposed Lamoille Summit Trail System located between Elko and Spring Creek, Nevada. The proposed project would consist of the construction of three trailhead/parking areas with approximately 47 miles of trails, designated as non-motorized and motorized use limited to class 1 e-bikes, on lands administered by the BLM.
The proposal would provide recreation opportunities for uses such as hiking, biking, equestrian, cross-country skiing, and snowshoeing. Information kiosks and interpretive signs to improve public awareness would be placed at trailheads and along trails. The project would complement existing and proposed bike lanes along Lamoille Highway (SR277.)
Additional information, including the preliminary environmental assessment, is available at the BLM National NEPA Register, where comments can be submitted through the ‘Participate Now’ option (preferred). Comments may also be emailed to BLM_NV_ELDO_TFO_Projects@blm.gov or delivered to the BLM Tuscarora Field Office, Attn: Lamoille Summit Trail System, 3900 E Idaho Street, Elko, NV 89801. The comment period will close August 4, 2025.

In 2015, the vision for LSTS was born through a collaboration between Elko Velo and the Bureau of Land Management (BLM). It started with a generous donation of $4000 from Barrick Gold and $1000 from Bristlecone Bikes, laying the groundwork for the initial 12 miles. Changes in leadership at the BLM and Elko Velo in 2019 led to a temporary stall in the project.
Fast forward to 2021, and LSTS regained momentum, thanks to a strong community partnership, Elko Trail System Initiative (ETSI). Comprising Elko Velo, Elko County, Northeastern Nevada Stewardship Group, and Nevada Outdoor School, this collective effort breathed new life into the LSTS project by way of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with the BLM in August 2021.
